Lessons Learned at Fitness Functions

This summer has been quite the learning experience! I was finishing up my fourth year of college at the University of Montevallo, and I had no idea how to actually put my knowledge to good use. I only knew how to be a student. I needed to get out there and what better way than an internship!

As the year continued guest speakers, under the health promotions umbrella, came in to talk to the class about their career fields and I quickly realized that the industry is jam-packed with people looking to help out. I just had to find the right internship to fit me. One day Sebastian came in to our class as a guest speaker and after listening to him and just seeing how passionate he was about personal training I knew that was who I wanted to learn from.

These are the top 3 lessons I learned during my internship with Fitness Functions:

  1. The most important thing I learned early on in my internship was that, in the eyes’ of my clients, I was the expert. I had to be confident!

  2. I realized that I have a purpose here at Fitness Functions. It was not just me answering my teachers’ questions for a test anymore. It was how can I make this person become healthier and reach their goals?

  3. The hardest thing to learn was that clients feed off of you energy. If you are having a bad day or are just not feeling it, that negative vibe can make the workout unpleasant.

Now that summer is coming to an end, my internship has gone and passed and I am officially a part of the Fitness Functions team! The newest lesson that I am learning from Sebastian and Sharon is how to build my clientele base. Rule number one, word of mouth is the best way to gain clients. So by all means, tell your friends, family, and coworkers that Fitness Functions has a new trainer!
